Dentures

Dentures are an option for people who have lost all of their natural teeth for a variety of reasons including, gum disease, tooth decay or injury or to replace missing teeth. Dentures a removable and can help restore your smile whenever you want. If you find it difficult to eat or speak then dentures could be what you’re looking for!

If you’ve lost all your teeth, there is nothing to hold up your facial muscle which can eventually sag- making you look older. Dentures can be made to look like your natural teeth and will help fill out the space from where your natural teeth were to prevent sagging and improve your smile without changing your appearance.

Types of dentures:

• Conventional- Once your teeth are removed and the tissue has healed, this removable denture can be placed in your mouth. 
• Immediate- If you’re looking for dentures right way, this is what you’re looking for. You won’t have to wait until the tissues have healed to get this denture but many need to have it realigned after your jaw heals.
• Overdenture-  If you’ve only partially lost teeth and have some remaining natural teeth, this option could be for you. It will fit over your natural teeth and dental implants can be used similarly.
• Partial Denture-This option of dentures includes the replacement teeth being attached to your remaining teeth with gum-colored plastic bases to provide a stronger option than full dentures. This procedure will require the dentist to make custom dentures for your needs and many have metal framework to connect to your teeth or other connectors if you’re looking for a more natural look using a device called precision attachments. Your dentist will discuss with you the varying options available for a partial denture and answer any questions you may have.

New dentures may take some time to get used to, usually a few weeks for most people. Until the muscles of your cheek and tongue get used to the new denture, they may feel loose for some time. Most people will feel minor irritation or sometime soreness. Over time, you will get used to the dentures and any problems you’re experiencing will go away. 

After you have the dentures, make sure to come back for your regular dental appointments as they may need to be checked and adjusted.
